Gorkha Jana Pustakalaya is one of the most trusted, non-political, and the best organizations in Darjeeling, West Bengal. It is a public library organization that works for social, cultural, and linguistic development. Gorkha Jana Pustakalaya was established on 8th June 1913. Which is registered on 09th August 2004 under the West Bengal Societies Act 1961.
It was not easy to open a federation before India became independent, that is, during British rule. There was a nationwide movement going on to liberate the country from the hands of the British. On the one hand, the dream of an independent India and on the other hand, the challenges to guide the society on the path of intellectual, educational, and cultural development were for our visionary forefathers. To balance the two, they had no choice but to open a library, which could have saved the British government from being overlooked and the

institution’s legitimacy. In the beginning, the library has a history of being active in activities such as education, literature, music, sports, politics, and the eradication of social evils. However, it has its history of organizing up to Dhobi Panchayat. Eventually, the Gorkha Public Library focused on language literature, reading, and student-oriented programs, leaving behind its institutions. Gorkha Jana Pustakalaya has come a long way which was not easy for them, it was a struggle for their existence. Our success is that after many ups and downs in the course of this long struggle, our hardships have been successful, and a place has been made for us in the minds of the people. Our goal is to keep our space intact by maintaining our activities in this way.

Mission

Literature and language are free and independent. The mission of Gorkha Jana Pustakalay is to create a better future for all in their mother tongue. Our thaught is to bring the struggling revolution of Nepali literature and language to every human being. Our organization is also working to better present Nepali language drama, dance, literature, writing, and Nepali culture and reach out to all. Our goal is to acquire skills in language and culture and to encourage the public.

Vision

What you see is not culture, culture is what you show to others. Our dream is to bring to the public the long cultural, linguistic heritage of the millennium that unveils our past. The Gorkha Jana Pustakalaya has the vision to highlight both the good and the bad of society through its mother tongue tradition. The bad aspects of our society are good and the good aspects need to be made best through literature. Our association does not operate profitably and commercially. The main purpose of this organization – introduce the mother tongue, culture, craft, and literature.

Goal

We want to see a future where the Nepali language and culture are universally accepted. Let people know a lot about this culture and be aware of it. At the same time, we are working towards the goal by which we can build the future of our children where every child gets food and necessary education and they succeed. We want to spread the name of our society, its culture, and its literature and uplift society in all ways.
